Being a college student can be a full-time job, not to mention the cost of attending school. So, how can students find the time and money to help the environment? Although going green may seem expensive and time-consuming, what most students don’t realize is a little goes a long way! Here are 10 convenient ways to be more eco-conscious on a budget.
It’s as simple as throwing your La Croix cans and Gatorade bottles in separate bins. Many college campuses have recycling bins available near the trash cans, or a recycling drop-off center.
2. Reuse, reuse, reuse.
Stop using plastic bags at the grocery store and start bringing reusable ones. Most grocery stores sell reusable bags for less than two dollars, and it’s easy to remember your bag if you just leave it in your car after using it. Reusing doesn’t stop there – approximately 80% of water bottles never get recycled, but we can fix this problem by drinking from reusable water bottles. Amazon sells a variety of bottles starting at around seven dollars. If you’re feeling really committed to the cause, ditch plastic straws for a reusable one. You can get these on Amazon for as little as six dollars – they even sell portable sets on keychains for easy travel! Any of these small lifestyle changes will make a difference.
3. Power down and unplug.
Why unplug, you ask? Well, electronic devices and appliances can consume energy even when they’re not running – aka “vampire” power sources. You might not think your tiny little phone charger that’s constantly plugged into the wall is using any power at all, but trust us, unplugging it will save energy and money!
4. Go paperless.
Take notes on your phone or computer instead of using a paper notebook.
5. Choose sustainable transportation.
Not only will walking and biking around campus help the environment, but it will save gas money and help you become more active for a healthier lifestyle. With limited parking at most campuses, it’s often easier to walk or bike anyway.
6. Conserve water.
It’s as easy as taking a shorter shower or turning off the water while you’re brushing your teeth. This can lower your bills too.
Did you know you can power your house or apartment with renewable energy through Greener State? For $1.25/mo. extra on your power bill, you can go green and make a real difference in Alabama. And, it only takes 2 minutes to sign up!
