Greener State

Customer Terms and Conditions

Overview
Greener State is the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) program (“Program”) offered by Alabama Power Company (“Company”) in accordance with the Company’s Rate OPS (Optional Products and Services). Participation in the Program is wholly voluntary and is neither a requirement nor condition of receiving electric service from Company. Participation in the Program will not impact Customer’s eligibility, metered usage, rates or charges for electric service from the Company. To participate in Greener State, Customer must be an existing accountholder of Company and be authorized to make decisions on behalf of the household regarding electric services. In addition, Customer’s account must be in good standing.

Terms and Conditions
By enrolling in the Program, Customer agrees to purchase RECs from the Company. The charge for your REC purchase(s) will be included as a separate item on your electric bill over twelve (12) equal installments. Upon payment of the last installment, Company shall retire the REC on Customer’s behalf and the Company will send a confirmation certificate to the Customer. The Customer shall have the right to claim all renewable and environmental attributes associated with their RECs. Failure to pay the full amount shall result in forfeiture of all amounts previously paid and no partial entitlement to any RECs. RECs purchased from the Company under the Program are non-refundable, non-resellable, non-divisible and non-transferrable. Company has full discretion to source RECs from the generation source it chooses, consistent with applicable Alabama state law. Customer’s participation in the Program shall be subject to Alabama Power Company’s Rules and Regulations for Electric Service.

What is a REC
To help facilitate the expansion of renewable energy generation, a system has been established that separates power into two parts: the actual electricity produced by a renewable generator and the renewable “attributes” of that power. One REC represents the non-power environmental or renewable attributes of 1,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable power, such as wind and solar—about as much electricity as the average home in Alabama uses every month. The RECs for the Program are associated with power purchased or generated by the Company from renewable sources. When you buy a REC under the Program, you have bought the exclusive right to claim that you’ve received all the environmental or renewable “benefits” of that purchased or generated power.
